Touched by a Calling

Touched by a Calling by Mark Nepo

“When touched by our calling, it doesn’t matter if we’ve been prepared or trained or certified or if we’ve been delayed for years. What matters is if we can listen to our own unmitigated possibility with our whole being. For this will enable us to begin, the way one day of rain and one day of sun will start the flower in its destiny to bloom. In deep and unexpected ways, saying yes is a form of listening that brings who we are and what we experience into true meeting. Saying yes is the beginning of all flowering.”

May this be of benefit.

Hey Shelley… I love your blog postings. What suggestions do you have for one who has lost touch with passion & any sense of meaning & calling? I am tired… Tired of struggle, tired of giving and giving, tired of trying to figure it all out. After the last 15 years of step-parenting, I am just done. I’ve never felt this fallow before. While it worries me, I am also wondering how to simply honor it as well… and look for the renewal that I hope will come once I finally feel deeply rested. In the meantime, I find I have to muster up the energy to push through obligations, with very little satisfaction. I look forward to any resources you may have…

      Dearest Rebecca,
First, I’d like to acknowledge and appreciate your courage for posting “what’s so” for you right here, right now. It sounds like a deep hollow, this winter’s fallow, and keen of you to name it so appropriately and know that it is the earthy part of renewal. Remember that quote by David Whyte, a few blogs ago, recounting the conversation with an old monk who reminded him that the antidote for being tired wasn’t rest but wholeheartedness? Sounds like the thing for you! Rediscovering your whole heart. I know a wonderful guide and companion with whom to share your treasure hunt – me! Let’s meet and see what’s possible. Namaste’, Shell-

yes, yes. and with that rain and sunshine the seed begins to grow. the dirt is usually the first to appear. we nurture it, love it, and leave it to become and grow. as it grows we ask, “what is it i want? what is my soul calling for?”
with love and gratitude for your sharing. Sue

If only our direct questions could reach deep enough to unlock those answers. But like the earth, our heart and soul’s core is often covered with layers of glacial matter. Mindfulness, when used in teaspoon size portions, gently lifts and reveals what has been waiting, laying fallow, sleeping, awaiting awakening. It occurs to me that if the seed is very far underneath neither the rain nor the sun can reach it…

Life is so satisfying and enriching when you are in love with what you do. Once you have found that heart and passion connection with your work, I find presonal benefits in becoming accredited, certified or degreed (probably not a word).

The quote about your calling really spoke to my heart this morning: “it doesn’t matter if we’ve been prepared or trained or certified or if we’ve been delayed for years. I like particularly that phrase “delayed for years.” I’ve been walking out into the land of improv, story and performance with little preparation feeling very aware of my age. But the calling is so great that I can’t ignore it! So the quote is like the hug of a friend…a bit of reinforcement on an unclear journey. Thanks as ever for your blog!

I am honored and delighted that both you and Wendy are following your soul’s code. Me, too. Ain’t it Grand! I just can’t not do it…it reminds me of that Rumi quote “The sea water begs the pearl to break its shell.” Just to think about what that really means…it doesn’t beg the shell to break, it begs the pearl to grow big enough to break it open from the inside out. I like to think of that and say it over and over. Mysterious and potent. Grateful to share this journey with you. xo
